Pseudofolliculitis barbae – that's what razor bumps are called scientifically! Not only do they look bad, but they hurt as bad as the real word is to pronounce. Luckily, preventing them is easier than you think:
Wet the area with warm water first.
Make sure your blade is sharp.
Use shaving gel. If you're out, conditioner can be a sufficient replacement.
Shave in the same direction that your hair is growing.
Add a moisturizer afterward.
If you have razor bumps that you're trying to get rid of, try these tricks:
Wet the area with cold water.
Apply moisturizer.
Use cortisone cream after you moisturize to minimize irritation.
Apply aftershave.
Try aloe vera, the magical skin plant!
