When it comes to Black hair care, we've all become accustomed to believing some things that simply aren't true. In this post, we'll take a look at some of these myths and find out the facts so you can learn how to care for your hair the right way.
Myth #1: Black hair just doesn't grow
All hair grows approximately six inches per year, regardless of the type or texture. However, hair can also break at the same rate that it grows if it's not properly moisturized and nourished.
Myth #2: Trimming my hair will help it grow faster
Trimming in and of itself has no effect on its rate of growth and is only necessary for removing knots and split ends.
Myth #3: I can co-wash my hair as often as I'd like
Co-washing should be treated like a treatment and only needs to be done once, maybe twice, a week. Too much co-washing can cause protein buildup, which makes your hair hard and leads to breakage – especially if you sleep with it in your hair.
Myth #4: Braids are best when it comes to protective styles
Any style in which the ends of your hair are tucked away is a protective style. Braids are great, but can be very damaging if you're not careful. Opt for bigger braids and don't go any smaller than the size of a standard No.2 pencil. It's also important to be very gentle with your edges to prevent breakage and headaches. Lastly, take your braids down after two months max so you replenish your hair with nutrients.
Myth #5: Black hair only needs to be washed a few times a month
You should wash your hair once every 7 to 10 days with a sulfate-free shampoo. Doing so will alleviate product and environmental buildup.
